Love, miscommunication, jealously and betrayal. If you are looking for these things in a play you've come to the right production. Othello is one of those plays where Shakespeare perfectly captures the human condition in a story that is still as relevant today as when it was first performed. Although the language seems foreign, the modern take on this classic drama is set in a world we all understand, but with one big twist. Everyone in the cast is female and all the characters are portrayed female. This gives the actresses the chance to explore characters which they never may have been able to portray and the chance to tell a well known story in a brand new way. You won't know what to expect unless you come watch. All and all this is not your usual Shakespeare experience.

"As women we don't always get the opportunity to play such meaty roles and that is why this production is so important. I have always said that if I was a man, I would play Iago. But now I don't have to be a man. I can be a woman playing a character which I am portraying as female...in a prison setting. Isn't that just perfect? all the scheming and planning all the while behind bars. It can only be fun." said by Regina Malan, who is playing Iago in Othello: A woman's Story.

Audience Responses

I loved the story line. Very entertaining. Although I'm not a shakespeare lover. Acting was superb thru-out and some scenes very emotional, especially the second half. The fight scene and other violent scenes were well portrayed. I loved it. The story got to me so that it stuck into my memory banks for a long time afterwards.

Not always convincing, especially the violence and lesbian scenes. Script well edited, good running time, but it seemed as though the play itself was more of a vehicle for the actress playing the character of Iago to shine. I often found it difficult to remain invested in what was happening on stage.

Absolutely AMAZING! Being lucky enough to be part of a small audience made us feel incredibly close to the action. We were on the edge of our seats when the tension rose and the actresses displayed such real emotion that we couldn't look away. Still want some of what Iago was sniffing ;) Can't wait for the more!

I absolutely enjoyed every second of the Othello performance. The actresses were so stunning and played their characters with so much confidence and realism that you could mistake them for real life people. I loved how Othello was set in a prison which gave it that twist from its original settings in Venice and Cyprus. I found the stage setup to be very creative as everything was already set up on stage so there was no need to have those close the curtain moments to set up the next scene and act as everything was already set. Lastly my favourite characters were Othello and Iago, Othello because of how realistic her emotions were when she heard about Cassio and Desdemona, and the intensity she brought on stage with the way she stared at the audience. Iago because of her 2 face witty nature and how she manipulated everyone, and those moments when the green light shown on her which showed her true emotion which was absolutely awesome. You guys did an absolutely stunning job, I hope to see you perform more in the future.

I enjoyed the overall vitality and contrasting characters. I have an acute hearing problem even with my hearing aids, and unfortunately miss quips.
