He Had it Coming, a collection of old and new sketches by Mike van Graan, was launched at the University of Pretoria (UP) in October 2019 as part of a weeklong series of seminars and lectures hosted by UP’s Programme for the Study of Culture and Transformation (CAST). He Had it Coming features an exciting new talent, Nancy Sekhokoane, under the direction of veteran actress, Faniswa Yisa. The multi-sketch revue employs satire, singing, poetry, humour and drama to explore and comment on a range of contemporary themes, provoking both reflection and catharsis.
Van Graan, currently an artist-in-residence at the University of Pretoria, has produced previous one-person, multi-sketch revues such as three editions of Bafana Republic, as well as Pay Back the Curry, State Fractureand Land Acts, the latter three with Daniel Richards, directed by Rob van Vuuren. Many of those revues achieved critical and audience acclaim, and earned their performers awards as well as providing them with platforms to showcase their talents.
From the responses thus far, He Had it Comingis likely to do the same for Nancy Sekhokoane, who has already earned a Fleur du Cap Award as Best Student, having graduated from AFDA in 2018.
“What a fabulous show last night. What a great performance…what talent!” was a message from the organisers of a literary Festival in Prince Albert where the show was performed on 2 November.
During a subsequent, short run at the Masambe Theatre (Baxter Theatre Complex), the responses (gleaned from Facebook posts) have been similarly enthusiastic.
